There are three sections in the grading examination: KIHON, which is a series of basic nominated movements, KATA, or formal exercise, and KUMITE, or pre-arranged sparring. The first technique required in preparation for the nominated movements is the execution of a powerful Low Block (GEDAN BARAI). } Maximum effort must be put into this first move as this immediately shows the examiner your confidence and fighting spirit. Following the Kata, you will be paired with a candidate of the same rank in order to perform 5 step sparring (GO HON KUMITE). Always show fighting spirit by blocking and attacking with full speed and power, regardless of the opponent' s size or gender.
